On Thursday morning, the Immigration Police of Thailand arrested a 46-year-old Australian citizen at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. The police intercepted the suspect when, according to the investigation, he was trying to board an international flight to leave the country. The arrest is related to the brutal murder of a 17-year-old Thai girl in the resort city of Pattaya. Her body was found in a suitcase in one of Pattaya's districts. Preliminary reports suggest that the victim was killed several days before her remains were discovered. The Pattaya police, together with immigration services, conducted an operational investigation which allowed them to identify the suspect and locate him. According to information from Thansettakij, the suspect was arrested in the departure area of the international terminal. He had a ticket for a flight to one of the Southeast Asian countries on his person. At present, the Australian national is detained at the Bangkok Immigration Police station. The investigation continues to clarify all circumstances surrounding the crime. The Pattaya police are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance camera footage. According to Bangkok Post, the motive behind the murder has not yet been established; however, the possibility of organized groups' involvement is not being considered. This is the second case in recent times where foreigners have become suspects in major criminal cases in Pattaya. Previously, the police interrogated the wife of a British businessman who was stabbed to death in his own home. Thai law enforcement has intensified control at airports and borders to prevent suspected individuals from leaving the country. The suspect faces life imprisonment or the death penalty according to Thailand's Criminal Code.
